The Business of Sport: Memphis Athletics from Peewee to Pro

Enjoy a conversation about "The Business of Sport: the Role of Memphis Athletics from Peewee to Pro" between moderator Geoff Calkins and panelists who are leaders at the Grizzlies, the University of Memphis Athletics program, Memphis Athletic Ministries, and Memphis Inner City Rugby.

While Memphis has long been a "sports town," it has only more recently marked its presence on the national stage with the strength of the Grizzlies, Redbirds, 901FC, the University of Memphis, and more. The Memphis community has been a significant supporter of the sports teams in the city, but we at Memphis Library Foundation have asked our moderator and panelists to engage with questions about the role and responsibility the sports teams of Memphis have to their athletes and to Memphians more generally.

Join us as Geoff Calkins, acclaimed Daily Memphian sports columnist, pushes our panelists to reflect on the role of economics, race, gender, and societal responsibility play in the decision-making of our panelists in youth, young adult, and pro athletics. This dynamic panel discussion will explore the advantages and challenges presented by sports for athletes and their communities.

Jonathan Torres, President and CEO of Memphis Athletics Ministries, works with young Memphians to find their identity, restore their hope, and change their lives.

Jason Wexler, President of the Grizzlies, promotes a culture of community engagement and civic responsibility within the Grizzlies nation.

Dr. Adam Walker, Executive Assistant Athletic Director at the University of Memphis, has spent the last few years in his role honing in on the work of name-image likeness for college athletes, making the UofM one of the leaders in this movement.

Faith Walker, Head Coach at Memphis Inner City Rugby, helps MICR close the opportunity gap, create a relentlessly supportive community, and drive upward mobility in under-resourced communities across Memphis.
